In 2016, ACE conducted a short business training seminar with local NGO Sahayak Hath. One of the young ladies attending, later took a loan form the NGO founder of $400 and started her own Beauty Parlour. She was able to pay this back within a year and is able to support herself and her family. Today she is also training several young ladies associated with Sahayak Hath and helping them gain long term skills for sustainability.
Two years ago, we were able to connect with a retired business leader who had built up successful Chicken Farm and Processing Plant. He then partnered with Ace to help an entrepreneur in western India start a Chicken farm. They did three batches of 5000 chickens, hiring 3 full time and about 5 part time people. Unfortunately a problem with flies in the Monsoon season was not properly resolved and the local council ordered it closed down. We are continuing to work with the entrepreneur as he considers options to start a new business or build up his existing goat farm. Meanwhile the local council working with a water conservation NGO is renting out the vacant facility.
Coffee shops and Tea shops,Goat Farms and Chicken Farms, Caterers and Food trucks, Tailoring Training and Primary Schools are some of the varied businesses we are involved with. We visited our different enterprises in Asia in early 2018 and participated with our partners in a Business Conference in Chiang Mai Thailand, where 7 businesses were launched or partially funded.
In India, one of our partners, Sahayak Hath has partnered with ACE to launch a tailoring class to equip needy women with skills to start their own tailoring business.We were delighted to find out that one of their young ladies trained by ACE not only started a beauty parlor but is also training other girls with these skills”. Unfortunately, the Chicken Farm launched in India had to close down and we are looking at other options for sustainability. The Furniture Business in PNG is getting licensed and registered while the Goat Farm faced some setbacks with its meat shop and is changing its strategy.
Meanwhile, we are actively coaching 5 different entrepreneurs and gearing up for the Business as Missions Event in Vancouver in June and the one later in October in Seattle. We also continue to travel and envision people with a passion for transformation and poverty alleviation using business. In Western India, we had 14 different NGO staff take basic training in developing a proof of concept for new startups that ranged from preschools to piggeries. Students in our partner School in Singapore were encouraged to pursue social impact and incorporate Sustainable Development Goals into their Business Plans.
Schools as Social Entrepreneurship. There is a desperate need for quality education in many areas of the world and the huge costs involved in building facilities and recruiting trained teachers, stump the most passionate educators. Entrepreneurs and Social activist Decent and Nadia in Malawi, are using some of these ideas in setting up a new school called “Extending Hope”.
Started last September in their home with a building plan begun on a nearby piece of land. This school already has 42 students( paying fees) and has had to turn away students while they look for an immediate investment of $20,000 to expand to three classrooms. Their vision of the school as a sustainable business that grows to support other social initiatives is an intentional move away from western funded NGO models that are caught up in a never-ending fundraising cycle.
Extending hope has 3 trained, passionate teachers making a difference in the lives of the children they teach. Their vision is to grow incrementally and build a sustainable model that can multiply. They are working with a business coach to finalize an initial business plan to complete a facility that will house the first five grades.

Eagle’s Nest
There will be a live “Dragon’s Den” (we call it Eagle’s Nest) where real-life entrepreneurs (both locally and internationally) pitch their business ideas to a panel of established business people people “the Eagles”. Each of these people on the panel have agreed to provide significant financial support for these small businesses, IF they have a sound business plan and IF they meet their criteria for success. The audience will have a chance to have watch this live to see the start of their business that have a social impact or transform their community.
